Competition Development Program

Junior Rippers

Picture
This is a fantastic 1-day/week program for young skiers looking to embark on their journey into the Freeride world! Junior Rippers is a great way for 10 and 11-year-olds to enhance their skiing skills as they continue to explore different aspects of the sport. The mix of terrain park, back bowls, and groomers offers a well-rounded experience that can really help build confidence and versatility on the slopes. The additional introduction to basic snow safety is offered and is crucial for these young athletes as they start exploring more challenging terrain.

Athletes are encouraged to participate in IFSA(International Free Skiing Association) Western Freeride competitions. TWO regional competition that covers all costs associated with a comp is included in your program fees.

As a 1-day athlete, you will have the opportunity to compete in a Maximum of 2 away regional comps (choose two of Kimberley, Panorama and Fernie) plus a single one-day National comp (Kicking Horse or Lake Louise).  There will be additional costs incurred if athletes attend a comp not included on this list.

Junior Rippers allows for up to 2 Regionals and 1 National (more details to come in the fall). If you are looking for a competition program, we recommend our Junior Big Mountain Comp program that provides more training opportunities and up to three Regional Competitions plus one National Competition. Coaching costs are included in program fees.  Additional coach travel expenses must be paid for in advance of participation in each comp.

Competition Programs

Junior Big Mountain Comp

Picture
Junior Big Mountain Comp is an excellent program for young skiers who are eager to dive into the world of big mountain freeride competition. Whether athletes are coming from the Grizzlies or other programming that instills the fundamentals of skiing, this program strives to adapt the athletes' learned skills and technical foundations of skiing into a Freeride, big mountain context. These athletes will have the opportunity to compete in a maximum of THREE Regional comps and ONE National 1-day comp. See Competition Info below

We start with early on-snow training on groomers as a strategic approach for young athletes preparing for big mountain freeride competitions. Groomed runs provide a controlled environment where athletes can focus on mastering fundamental skiing techniques such as carving, edging, and balance.

Moreover, the inclusion of basic snow safety training throughout the season is available and crucial for these young skiers, especially for those with aspirations to venture into more advanced and varied terrain.

For athletes to take full advantage of early season training, it is essential that skis be well tuned.

Big Mountain Comp Two-Day

Picture
Our Big Mountain Comp program targets competitive athletes 12 years of age and older. This is a comprehensive program designed to develop well-rounded skiing skills and the ability to adapt to various terrain and conditions. Focusing on competition criteria will help athletes refine their techniques and decision-making on the slopes during competition.

Starting with technical skill development on groomers will provide a solid foundation for athletes as they await more challenging terrain to open. Ensuring well-tuned skis will undoubtedly contribute to maximizing their training sessions and building confidence for the upcoming competition season.

Athletes who have pre-qualified for National Level Events will compete at three Nationals and one Regional Comp, while athletes pursuing National Level Event qualification will target up to four Regional Comps.

Snow safety will be more at the forefront than our other programs and athletes will be challenged to take their skiing skills into slack country environments where they can put their knowledge into practice supervised by snow science professionals and guides. A backcountry hut trip is available to select athletes based on their age, progression, fitness, demand, and other prerequisites.
